Tree pruning

Sir, —City Council parks staff (October 27) are entirely correct to leave pruning cuts unpainted. Any competent tree surgeon familiar with Dr Shigo’s research into microbial succession and compartmentalisation knows that tree paints, whether or not they contain a fungicide, are at best useless, except possibly in orchards. The real threat in Christchurch is the uneconomic and disfiguring practice of “topping” privately owned trees. It is better to remove completely and replant a problem tree or employ a qualified tree surgeon to prune correctly, without the tree paint.—Yours, etc., N. J. DERRICK. November 11, 1988.
