Awards announced

PA Auckland The sire and dam of Australian “Horse of the Year,” Beau Zam, were honoured by the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association on Sunday. His sire, Zamazaan, won the Dewar Trophy for combined Australian and New Zealand stakes earnings. The evergreen stallion, which stands at the late Keith Burley’s Carlyle Stud, was leading sire in Australia last year, with his 106 runners collecting a record $Au5t3,335,057. Beau Zam, winner of the Tancred Stakes-A.J.C. Derby double, was chief contributor to that tally, earning in excess of sAust2 million. Zamazaan’s New Zealand racing stock, among them the New Zealand St Leger winner, Mr Bunnythorpe, won $423,325. Heather Burley, widow of Keith, collected the award. Beau Zam’s dam, Belle Cherie, took out the prestigious "Broodmare of the Year” award for her owner, Colin Stuart. She became the third member of her family to win the award, after Dulcie, dam of Balmerino, and her daughter Micheline, dam of Surround. Belle Cherie is a sister to Surround, being by Sovereign Edition out of a full sister to Micheline. Balmerino and Surround were both voted “Horse of the Year” as three year olds, in New Zealand and Australia respectively. Belle Cherie is due to foal a full brother or sister to Beau Zam shortly. Mr Stuart, of Roto-O-Rangi, was on hand to collect the award.
