Addington judicial inquiries

New Zealand’s leading reinsman, Maurice McKendry, was suspended until after Saturday for careless driving in yesterday’s D.B. Draught New Zealand Cup at Addington Raceway. McKendry, driving Lord Lenny, was found guilty of pushing Rolls Hanover down on to the fence after 400 m, the latter breaking and losing several lengths. The Ashburton reinsman, John Hay, was suspended until after Friday for causing interference with 150 m to run in the Parkroyal Christchurch Mobile Pace. Hay (Worthy Andy) checked Happy Hazel, which broke, with Worthy Andy, which finished second, being disqualified. Craig Buchan, the driver of Nero’s Jay in the Liquorland Sires’ Stakes Heat, admitted he made an error of judgment when he moved off the back of the runner-up, Goldie’s Fella, allowing Torch Song a gap on the inside. He stated he would be recommending to the horse’s owners that a more experienced reinsman take the drive in his future racing at Addington. Robert Cameron (Great Provider) and Jim Curtin (Wait A Moment) were questioned over their drives in the Archibalds Jaguar Pace, and their performances noted. Horses stood down to trial on two occasions were: Lord Lincoln, and Charles Nero and Finest Hour (standing starts only). Stunner was stood down on trial on four occasions after breaking on the home turn in the Parkroyal Christchurch Mobile Pace. The connections of Highview Boy and Beau Peer were warned to improve the racing manners of these horses, while Pat Heffernan, the trainer of Cardinal Star, advised the stewards this horse had travelled well to the meeting but had sweated up badly before the race and this may have attributed to his stopping with 500 m left in the Champernay Pace.
