Drivers’ comments
Tony Herlihy (Luxury Liner, first): “When Maestro went past me 1 didn’t think it would be hard to win, but just tougher. I was still confident because I hadn’t hit him at that stage. It was a marvellous run.” Vin Knight (Maestro, second): “You can’t make excuses when the winner won like he did. I thought we might hang on when we got to the front but he was getting very tired. I was happy with the run.” Peter Ryder (Speedy Cheval, third): “He was under pressure a bit on the turn and hung in a shade but really I had my chance.” Jack Smolenski (Gina Rosa, fourth): “Very pleased. She hung a little on the turn and battled that last bit. But a good run.” Richard Brosnan (Frangelico, equal fifth): “Absolutely terrific considering her preparation. I couldn’t be more pleased.” David Butcher (Gaelic Skipper, equal fifth): “He had a nice run and I was very happy with him. At least we beat home eight of the best.” Kevin Williams (Master Mood, seventh): “I couldn’t be disappointed with the run considering the time. He just wasn’t good enough on the day.” Tony Milina (Elmer Gantry, eighth): “He’s just a boy still. We both did our very best.” Anthony Butt (Final Offer, ninth): “He just battled.” Bob Cameron (Rolls Hanover, tenth): He was squeezed on the first bend and had no chance after.” Patrick O’Reilly (Skipper Dale, elventh): “He showed nothing. He’ll be retired now.” Jim O’Sullivan (Quite Famous, twelfth): ‘I couldn’t go with them after doing all that work. I never even touched him.” Maurice McKendry (Lord Lenny, thirteenth): “I had to use him up and he just blew out.” Mark Purdon (Tax Credit, fourteenth): “Having that upset before the start didn’t help. He swung around and that was it.”
