Champions to defend titles

Patty Fendick, of California, winner of the Auckland based 1988 Nutri-metics Women’s international tennis tournament, and the Canadian, Jill Hetherington, winner of the inaugural Wellington Fernleaf women’s Classic, have both indicated their intentions to return to New Zealand to defend their titles in January and February next year. Neil Purdon, the tournament director for both the New Zealand tournaments on behalf of the promoters, Global Sports and Promotions, Ltd, travelled to the recent United States Open tournament in New York to contact players and get some

idea of likely participants. Fendick and Hetherington, popular winners of the two New Zealand tournaments, played together in the women’s doubles at the United States Open, surprising many when, after being ranked twelfth, they reached the finals by beating the World No. 1. Steffi Graf, and Gabriela Sabatini in the semifinals before losing to Gigi Fernandez and Robyn White in the final. “Most of the girls who were here last year would like to come back,” said Purdon on his return to Auckland. “Fendick and Hetherington are both keen to defend their titles.
