The forthcoming Ferrymead anniversary celebrations would be an ideal time for the Railways to commit itself to a permanent rail connection between Christchurch and Ferrymead, says a Christchurch City Councillor, Charles Manning. Cr Manning said the proof of the tourist attraction a steam rail journey to Ferrymead could be is in the popularity of steam trips Ferrymead had planned as part of the 125th anniversary of railways in New Zealand celebrations.
The Railways is putting in a temporary connection to Ferrymead from the Christchurch to Lyttelton line for the celebrations. The corporation has yet to answer a Christchurch City Council inquiry about the cost of making the connection permanent. Cr Manning estimated the cost could be more than $lOO,OOO.
