Express train ‘rescued’

Two relief diesel electric locomotives were sent to the rescue of the Coastal Pacific Express which broke down about 30km north of Waipara at 7.05 p.m. yesterday.

The train was due in Christchurch at 7.35 p.m., but two breakdowns between Spotswood and Omihi stations delayed its arrival to about 11.15 p.m. A Railways Corporation operations officer said the train broke down for 20 minutes between Spotswood and Ferniehurst stations because generator problems caused loss of lighting. Signal failures on the line between Mina and Scargill slowed the train further, until it broke down 30km north of Waipara, the operations officer said.
