$165,000 given to appeal
PA Wellington New Zealanders have so far given $165,000 to World Vision’s appeal for flood-stricken Bangladesh. The aid organisation's lower North Island manager, Mr Lleon Downes, said the final tally would probably be more than $250,000. Mr Downes said World Vision New Zealand was able to commit SUSIOO,OOO ($162,733) to Bangladesh in early September in advance of the appeal because of a tremendous response to the organisation’s projects this year. It had received $ll.B million, mainly through child sponsorships for Third World countries. “We now have more than 26,000 children being sponsored by New Zealanders,” Mr Downes said. “That far exceeds sponsorships by any other country on a per capital basis.”
