Sheep price rises

Elders Pastoral is to increase payments for its live-sheep exports because of the falling value of the New Zealand dollar. The Christchurch area manager of Elders, Mr Graeme Munro, said the payment for a 33kg liveweight shorn longtailed ram would increase from $l9 to $22 delivered to Timaru. The decline in the New Zealand dollar and “further negotiations” with the buyer had allowed for the increase in payments,

he said. Elders had contracted to send 200,000 long-tailed rams to the Haj Festival in Saudi Arabia. “Well over half” that number had been secured, said Mr Munro. All suppliers would be paid the increase, regardless of when they signed their contracts. An advance payment of $lO per lamb would be made in January with the balance being paid when the consignment was shipped in May or June.
