Economic sanity
Sir, —If it were decided to hold a public debate on the possibility of the law being indeed an ass, the serious matter of collecting GST on 20c donations for jigsaw puzzles borrowed by the Canterbury aged when at the same time $2.5M is squandered on taxation propaganda would surely merit inclusion. There must be hundreds of ways in which that money could have been better spent, such as on those courses to train teachers for the S.F.A. (Skills For Adolescence) programmes. Those two fine articles in “The Press” on September 28 showed a way of improving social behaviour and developing character which could be of immense value. Pity, bang go such wonderful opportunities to influence thousands of youngsters for good. — Yours, pfc P. B. WYE. October 2, 1988.
