New Zealanders
Sir,—The worst thing the Labour Government has done has been to set up the Waitangi Tribunal, which is effectively dividing a nation. We are now on the fast track to a “reverse” apartheid, with tragic consequences as families and friends
will be divided. My family has been in New Zealand for seven generations and is just as much tangata whenua as the Maoris. You do not have to be Maori to love this beautiful land which my father fought for overseas, and helped defend our shores against invasion and foreign rule in World War 11. I strongly resent being labelled a pakeha when I am a loyal New Zealander born and bred. There must be equal rights for everyone who lives under our flag. Mr Peters is correct. There will be an eventual white backlash. Resentment is smouldering beneath the surface and is far more dangerous than an open flame. — Yours, etc. J. Y. GARDINER. October 2, 1988.
