Flexible hours

Sir, —The Government is promoting new tax changes which, though far from perfect, do at least represent some attempt to stimulate the work ethic and provide for a sharing of the resultant prosperity. On the other hand we have a combination of some printing industry employers and the Employers’ Federation itself relentlessly pushing for “flexible working hours.” If applied, this would wipe out overtime payments and allowances, thereby eliminating the opportunity to enjoy the longawaited lower tax rates. Any

profits from the flexible hours exercise would be straight to the employers’ coffers, at the social and economic expense of working men and women. Are employers and staff going to share in the future prosperity of this country, of are we not? —Yours, etc. PETER J. TOLAND. October 1, 1988.
