Commission pussyfooting — Mayor

The Mayor of Richmond, Mr Kerry Marshall, has accused the Local Government Commission of “pussyfooting” with its separate region for Marlborough.

It had taken bold decisions in other parts of New Zealand and had said Wairarapa could not be a separate region with a population base of 36,Q00 yet had put up a proposal for a Marlborough region wth a population of 34,000, said Mr Marshall. The commission had also shown inconsistency in its different approaches to Kaikoura and Golden Bay. On the one hand it had decreed the amalgamation of Golden Bay and its 4500 people with the Tasman District Council and on the other had provided for a Kaikoura District Council with a population of 3500.
