Sport, medicine

Sir, —C. R. Payne (October 4) writes that if our Olympic medal count is compared with our population and that of East Germany it will show how the opposite of what I claimed was our relatively poor showing in Seoul is true. East Germany’s population is about 17M. Ours is about 3.2 M — a relation of 5.3 to one. East Germans collected altogether 102 medals (amongst them 37 golds). New Zealand collected 13 (amongst them three golds). Relations are 7.8 to one for all medals and 12.3 to one for golds. New Zealand athletes excelled in sports accessible largely to higher-income classes — riding, sailing and rowing. Formerly we had successes in running and games. One cannot but feel that the greater accessibility to health, education and specialised sports training in East Germany has contributed to East German sports triumphs.—Yours, etc., W. ROSENBERG. October 4, 1988.
