Hurunui bursts its banks again

Heavy rain in the Alps has caused the Hurunui River to burst its banks for the second time in three weeks. The district manager of Timberlands Canterbury, Mr Roger Washbourn, said the river was flowing back to where it broke its banks last month but had not flooded across State highway 7. "It has breached its banks again in the same place as last time, but is flowing through the chan-

nel that was made to relieve the pressure after the first flood,” Mr Washbourn said. The Amuri County Clerk, Mr Phil Wild, said the water had been confined to the northern end and had flowed about 50m north of the original bank. It had not reached the picnic area or recreational reserve. The river had peaked about 1 p.m. yesterday but was flowing through “nicely,” he said.
