Directorship has edge on rivals at Morrinsville meeting

Special correspondent Auckland Directorship has had the benefit of a race already this season, which might give him the slight edge he needs when tackling a strong field, including Landora’s Pride, at the Morrinsville Trotting Club’s meeting at Cambridge this evening.

Last Saturday at Alexandra Park Directorship cruised to an easy win in the Lion Red Handicap. He had two lengths to spare from Lumber’s Pride. Co-trainer, Gary Smith, believes Directorship is a more mature horse than he was towards the end of last season. His break after finishing a disappointing last in the Rowe Cup has done him the world of good. Directorship’s run would only have improved him. He took little out of himself, but strode out pleasingly over the final stages, running his last 800 metres in 58.8. Although Directorship has drawn No. 9 — the outside on the front row — in the $lO,OOO D.B. Morrinsville Cup, he has the ability to overcome that and win. Three previous Morrinsville Cup winners will make Directorship work for all he is worth. Landora’s Pride, now a sprightly nine years old, won the race in 1985, beating Empire Lobell, Tough Talk, Admiral Soanai and Jenner. According to her Pukekohe partowner, Mrs Judy Allingham, Landora’s Pride might not be quite as forward this season as in previous years. “Trevor (Allingham, the trainer) seems to think she will be all the better for the run,” said Mrs Allingham yesterday. “He is hoping to' have her near her best for the Benson And Hedges InterIsland at Alexandra Park on October 18. “The wide draw will not help her, either, but we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.” Landora’s Pride drew No. 8. Over the years she has invariably produced good efforts when fresh and her class should carry her a long way. Jenner and Admiral Soanai — both 11-year-olds — are the other Morrinsville Cup winners engaged again this year. Back in 1983 Jenner won his first cup at Cambridge and the following year, when the race was run at Alexandra Park, beat a top field which included Sir Castleton. He is racing generously in spite of his years and is not without a chance. Admiral Soanai has won the last two renewals of the Morrinsville Cup. Last year, in the absence of Landora’s Pride,, which was scratched, he strolled to victory by two and a quarter lengths from Hey Peter and Your Honour. Your Honour, a stablemate of Jenner and Directorship, appeals strongly once again. She gave a fine performance when fourth last Saturday behind Directorship, after sitting without cover most of the way.

Most attention tonight will centre on the two-year-old pacers as they clash in the $21,000 Morrinsville Juvenile Stakes. Call Me Al and Rameka, both impressive winners of their only starts, should dominate the betting, although the presence of the South Islander, Head Above Water, a trial winner recently at Addington, makes for an interesting race. Maurice McKendry, who has been associated with the Breed stable for many years, has opted to drive Rameka, Brent Mangos will pilot Call Me Al, which looks the winner from the draw.
