Soviets eye Cup
NZPA-Reuter San Diego The Soviet Union is considering making its first challenge for the America’s Cup, a San Diego Yacht Club official said yesterday. The club Commodore, Douglas Alford, said Michael Smirnov, a Soviet trade official in Washington, had telephoned him recently to inquire how Soviet yacht clubs could file challenges to sail in the next Cup regatta, scheduled for 1991. The call was followed up this week by a letter from Timer Pinegin, the general secretary of the Soviet Sailing Federation, to Sail America, the managing arm of the San Diego Yacht Club.
