After 14 years the New Zealand squash championships will finally return to Christchurch in September next year. The 1989 nationals were allocated to the Christchurch Squash Rackets’ Club at a recent meeting of the New Zealand association’s management committee in Palmerston North, 1 L Christchurch hasih five-court complex, the minimum for ?ai national championships and the same as the Palmerston North club, the base for this year’s event T ..■■■■>'■ ■ The Christchurch .S.R.C. was the host for the national championships of 1963, 1969 and 1975 but the only South Island club to hold the event since has been the Timaru club, on three occasions. The president of the Canterbury
Squash Rackets Association, Alan Dunlop, said that two big tournaments — the New Zealand age-group championships and the New Zealand secondary schools championships — have been held in Christchurch this year and running the nationals should not pose a problem. •'We can do it as well, if not better, than most of them in the North; Island,” Mr i Dunlop said. He said that the basic criteria now was that one in three New Zealand charm pionships came to the South Island. Mr Dunlop said that being awarded the championships was especially opportune with the good performance of the Canterbury teams at this year’s nationals, the women finishing second and the men third. “It’s quite exciting.”
