Sport, medicine
Sir, —A correspondent from East Germany in “The Press” (September 10) wrote that East Germany has 40,000 doctors. Her comment was directed to the point that many of them want to emigrate. However, in view of the disproportionate' sports triumphs of East Germany (23 gold medals compared to 11 for West Germans with a population over three times the size), much more relevant seems to be your correspondent’s comment that there are 40,000 doctors in East Germany; that is, one doctor for 425 East Germans. In New Zealand in 1983 we had one doctor for 635 New Zealanders (and I suppose many doctors want to emigrate). Is .there perhaps a link between East German sports triumphs and. the efficient and universal health services there?
And a link between the rundown of our health services and our relatively poor showing in Seoul? — Yours, etc., W. ROSENBERG. September 27, 1988.
