Ozal might not quit

NZPA-Reuter Ankara The Turkish Prime Minister, Turgut Ozal, has been beaten but not humiliated in a key referendum and need not carry out his threat to quit, top Ozal aides said. Political sources however said a 65 per cent “no” vote on a constitutional amendment warned that many Turks were losing patience with problems like 78 per cent inflation.

Top officials from Mr Ozal’s ruling Motherland Party however said the 35 per cent “yes” vote reached after 21 million of 26 million votes had been counted was close enough to the 36.3 per cent the party polled in a general election ten months ago.
