Chch entrants dominate Picton triathlon
PA Picton Christchurch competitors took the first eight places in the Mariners Mall triathlon in Picton on Saturday. In perfect weather a record number of teams and individual entries lined up for the start from Mariners Mall in High Street. Twenty-five teams of three and 89 individual competitors took on the three-stage course. None of the pundits picked the over-all winner, Steve Gurney, of Christchurch, who completed the course in a blistering 2h 27min 10s taking 12min off last year’s record set by Brian Sanders, of Wellington. Gurney said it was one of
the better “balanced” courses he has run, with an equal amount of effort required for each section. First home in the open women’s section, Claire Parkes, was no surprise. The Nelson competitor is fast becoming recognised as one of New Zealand’s leading contestants in multi-discipline events for women. Her time of 3h Imin 20s brought her home twenty-second overall. Main placings:— Open—men: S. Gurney 1, A. Sherratt 2, A. Roxburg 3, D. Forsyth 4, R. Prince 5, M. Bassett 6 (all Christchurch). Women: C. Parkes (Nelson) 1, A. Keeling (Christchurch) 2, V. Prince (Christchurch) 3. ..
