Trophy caps 75th year

Western won the English Cup for the twenty-third time when it downed Woolston W.M.C., 1-0, at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday in the finale to the Canterbury Football Association’s programme. Its victory was an ideal way to mark the club’s seventy-fifth anniversary and a good way for the coach, Ron Provan, to finish his coaching stint with the club.

Western went to the lead after 28min when Mark Smith had a corner flicked on at the near post by Gavin Thomas, the ball falling for Marty Hamilton to score. Woolston, which was always the underdog against its southern league first division opponent, came back in the second half, testing the Western goal keeper, Steve Payne, on several occasions after some neat build ups. Western kept Woolston at arms length for much of the half however, eventually running out the winner to cap its anniversary year with a trophy.
