N.Z. Post to be taken to court
By
SUZANNE KEEN
The Post Office Union is taking New Zealand Post to the Labour Court for its handling of certain Christchurch branch closings. The chairman of the Canterbury section of the union, Mr Phil Yarrall, said yesterday that in certain recent closings New Zealand Post had breached its award agreement. Mr Yarrall said that when the corporation identified surplus staff positions it was supposed to come to the union to work out a relocation or redundancy package. However, in most cases
the union found out about the closings the same day staff were told. “They told one woman at the Wainoni Post Office that she could have severance and the other that she could take relocation or nothing at all.” Mr Yarrall said the union was also unhappy about the way New Zealand Post was announcing branch closings over a five-week • or six-week period instead of all at one time. “We believe there are more to come and it is only because of the furore over the big lot they had last time that they are doing it like this."
