Riding future doubt

By

DAVID McCarthy

Senior rider, John Dowling, is facing a further lengthy delay to any return to race riding and his future in that role could be in doubt. Dowling injured his left hand some weeks ago while attending to a horse and its recovery has not been as rapid or as sound as hoped' for.

“The hand has altered shape and at the moment the grip I’m getting is nowhere near good enough for raceday. It is hard to say how it will heal from now on but it does not look promising,” Dowling said. Nor is that hand the only fitness bother the rider has. He is shortly to undergo minor surgery

for tendon problems in his right hand and given normal recovery time this will mean several weeks being sidelined from riding. Dowling has ridden over 900 winners and is losing optimism that he can now achieve a longheld ambition to ride 1000 winners before hanging up his boots.
