Former All Black dies

PA Auckland Ron Rangi, the All Black centre who destroyed the 1965 Springboks with his powerful midfield tackling, died in Auckland on Tuesday. He was 47. The All Black coach of the mid 19705, John Stewart, once said that Rangi was the player most responsible for the All Blacks winning the test series against the 1965 Springboks. Rangi played 10 matches for the All Blacks from 1964 to 1966. Significantly, all 10

were tests. He made his All Black debut in the second test against the Wallabies in 1964, Then he played in all the next nine test matches, the third test against the Wallabies in 1964, the four tests against the touring Springboks here in 1965 and the four home tests against the British Lions in 1966. He was twice awarded the Tom French Cup as the outstanding New Zealand Maori rugby player in 1964 and 1965.
