Shirley out to break jinx
The Shirley Boys’ High School first XV will attempt to break a jinx on southern sides when it competes in the Trust Bank Top Four rugby tournament in Napier this week. No South Island team has won the contest in its six years of operation, but Shirley’s good record this season suggests it has a good chance of redressing the balance. Earlier this year Shirley won a similar quadrangular tournament in the North Island, beating Palmerston North Boys’ High and Hamilton Boys’ High in the process.
It achieved a 3-2 win-loss ratio in matches against other Christchurch schools, and gained meritorious victories against Nelson College and Kings High School (Dunedin). Two of Shirley’s front row forwards, Scott Kennedy, the captain and prop, and Mathew Sexton, the hooker, were members of the New Zealand secondary schools’ team this year. The other participants in the tournament are Napier 8.H.5., Gisborne B.H.S. and Western Heights H.S., the school whose footballing graduates include Wayne
Shelford, Steve McDowell and Hika Reid.
Shirley has a difficult assignment, as it is drawn to play Napier on its home ground. Since an unbeaten tour of Australia in May, Napier has won all seven inter-school matches, Palmerston North, Gisborne, and Te Aute and Wellington Colleges being among the vanquished. The winning sides will play for top honours at McLean Park on Saturday afternoon. The earlier matches, on Thursday, will be played under lights. 1
