Sockburn’s Worley surprise choice

Mike Worley (Sockburn) is a surprise inclusion in the South Island men’s indoor cricket side to play the North Island at Canterbury Court on Thursday evening. Worley did not make the Canterbury team but forced his way into selection for the inter-island match with a solid performance at the recent South Island club championships in Dunedin.

Howzat, which won the South Island club title, are strongly represented and supply the captain, Steve Booth. The only non-Cantabrian is lan Muir, of Otago. The South Island team is:— S. Booth (captain), B. Harris, C. Harris, L. Germon, P. Kennedy, J. Marsh, M. Worley, C. Williamson, I. Muir Coach: M. Vaughan. The strength of the game in this region is shown by the fact that the entire South Island women’s team is made up of Canterbury players.

The team is: T. Anderson (captain), J. Turner, D. Ford, S. Illingworth, M. Lewis, K.

Withers, K. Comber, J. Robertson, A. Devine. Coach S. Logan. • The national inter-provin-cial indoor cricket tourna-' ment will begin at Sockburn later in the week. A roundrobin competition will be played on Friday and Saturday with the finals on Sunday afternoon.

The Canterbury women won the title last year but this season are without some of their top players — Karen Gunn, Brigit Legg, Sarah Illingworth and Nicki Turner. Coached by an astute Steve Logan the Canterbury side is still the competition favourite. The bowling attack will be sperheaded by the in swinger, Jenny Turner, and with the bat Maia Lewis, Debbie Ford and Andrea Devine have been in excellent form all season. The captain, Trudy Anderson, is a shrewd tactician and Marina Russell is efficient behind the stumps. The men’s squad is also a strong contender for a finals

spot. It is strengthened this year by the inclusion of two talented Shell series players, the batsmen, Peter Kennedy, and the wicket-keeper, Lee Germon.

The batting is further bolstered by the prolific runscoring brothers, Chris and Ben Harris. Some brilliant fielders are in the team, particularly Craig Williamson, Brett Saunders and Julian Marsh.

Sternest competition should come from Auckland and Wellington which both include a couple of New Zealand representatives.

Women’s team: T. Anderson (C), J. Turner, K. Withers, M. Lewis, M. Russell, K. le Comber, J. Robertson, M. Ormandy, K. Lees, L. McClintock, D. Ford, A. Devine, S. Logan (coach). Men’s team: B. Harris (C) S. Booth (VC) C. Louis, B. Fahey, P. Kennedy, J. Marsh, C. Williamson, C. Harris, L. Germon, B. Saunders, P. Steele, G. Gardner (coach).
