Hockey camp ‘positive experience’
The New Zealand women’s hockey team had a draw and two losses in its final three matches against the Canadian Olympic team in Sydney last week.
The games were at the conclusion of a four-week training camp in Sydney for the New Zealand squad.
On Wednesday the Canadians beat New Zealand 2-0. Both goals were scored by Shelia Forshaw, the Canadians’ outstand-
ing player, who has been brought out of retirement at the age of 30, to spearhead their Olympic bid.
On Thursday New Zealand drew 2-2 with the Canadians. Pat Barwick, the New Zealand coach, was especially pleased with that performance because the New Zealanders came from two goals down early in the second half.
Mary Clinton scored from a penalty-corner 15
minutes into the second half, and after frequent pressure on the Canadian circle for the remainder of the half, Sue Duggan scored from the top of the circle after a break down the right flank.
In the final game on Friday Canada beat a tired New Zealand 3-1, although Mrs Barwick was pleased with the secondhalf performance when New Zealand got a goal back after being down 0-3 at the interval.
Mrs Barwick said the four-week training camp was "a very positive experience” but there were still aspects of the squad’s play that had to be improved, in particular goal shooting. The New Zealand team has a tour of South East Asia planned for next year, but before that Mrs Barwick hopes to have a training camp for the national squad over a week or a week-end during the summer.
