South Westland hui

About 300 people attended a hui at the Bruce Bay Hall in South Westland at the week-end to reunite descendants of the original Maori people of the area. Some travelled from as far afield as Auckland for the hui, which resulted in the formation of a tribal council, Te Runanga o Te Koeti Turanga. Members of the Te Koeti, Wilson-Te Naihi, Bannister and Mahuika families were represented. Mr Bob Wilson, of Haast, was elected to chair the council, and will be assisted by elders and a committee of 18.
