Operation Winfly was launched this week from the Harewood Base, Christchurch. While United States Navy personnel made final checks on five Cl3O Hercules aircraft involved in the operation, two flights ferrying supplies and personnel to the New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme at Scott Base flew from Christchurch on Tuesday. Two flights left yesterday, one being forced back because of bad weather.

Operation Winfly marks the beginning of the New Zealand research programme’s 1988-89 summer season in Antarctica. Before the scientific and support teams begin to fly south in October, specialist teams will work on renovation and repairs to the base’s facilities, including the preparation of two runways on the ice to handle United States Navy and Royal New Zealand Air Force flights.
