Canty University skiers chosen
Three racers from Canterbury University, Rachel Scott, Guy Saxton and Mac Mouat, have been included in the New Zealand Universities ski team to compete in the World Students Winter Games in Bulgaria next March.
The team was named at the end of the recent Kiwi Lager New Zealand Universities ski tournament at Turoa.
Scott skied strongly to win both the women’s slalom and giant slalom events, and take the combined. The men’s favourite, Karl Burtscher, of Canterbury, failed to finish either race and put himself out of contention for the New Zealand Universities team. However, he was named as reserve. The full team is:— Women: Scott (Canterbury), Tania Casey (Auckland), Sarah Bell, Alex Blair (Otago).. Men: Paul Keating (Auckland), Hamish Bell (Otago), Guy Saxton, Mac Mouat (both Canterbury). Officials: Chef de mission/ team doctor: William Roileston. Team manager: Hugh Scott. Press officer: Paul Tapsell.
Team members will meet in early December for a dryland fitness camp at the University of Canterbury. They will later meet in Austria in mid-February for a two-week training camp in the Innsbruck area and then travel to Bulgaria for the Games.
Student sport has a high profile in Europe and America and the delegation will also be gathering information to investigate the possibility of holding a world students competition in New Zealand.
