‘Ashamed’ Cantona apologises
NZPA-Reuter Paris France’s most expensive soccer player, Eric Cantona, has apologised for a vitriolic outburst during the week-end against national trainer, Henri Michel.
Cantona, surprisingly omitted from the 16 selected for a game with Czechoslovakia in Paris, called Michel “one of the world’s most incompetent trainers” in a television interview.
On Tuesday, however, the striker, who cost Marseille a record French fee of SNZS.4 million in June, changed his tune completely. “After seeing and hearing again what I said, after the match on Saturday, I have told Henri Michel that I was rather rude,” he said. “I am a little ashamed of myself. Now I regret what I said and what I did.” The French Football Federation on Sunday dropped Cantona from the side who have an away fixture with Czechoslovakia, and said further disciplinary measures would be considered.
