Body for amateur fishing
PA Wellington . An organisation has been formed to represent the interests of recreational fishers. In Auckland, the Big Game Fishing Council, Federation of Freshwater Anglers, Underwater, Angling and Casting, and Sports Goods associations lent, their support to the formation of the New Zealand Amateur Sports Fishing Council. The amalgamation resulted from the dissolution of the Recreational Fishing Council, which left amateur fishers without a voice. The new council recognises the importance of protecting the’ rights of recreational salt and freshwater fishers. Members will meet the Minister of Fisheries, Mr Moyle, on August 30 to discuss the implications of the preferential fishing rights recently granted some Maori tribes and further claims under the Treaty of Waitangi.
The council believes the meeting will be the “most important single event affecting every amateur fisherman in the country” and is prepared to campaign to protect the interests of recreational fishers should it be dissatisfied with the Government’s determination over the contentious issue.
