Students support Devoy

Parks and Recreation students at Lincoln College are supporting Susan Devoy in her claim that prize money in the New Zealand Open squash tournament should be the same for women and men. The students and lecturing staff have written to the New Zealand Squash Rackets Association setting out a number of arguments for equal prize money. They say that women have kept New Zealand in the

sporting limelight for decades, and the prize-money issue is an opportunity for the association to become a forerunner for equality in sport. The N.Z.S.R.A. would be hailed as a “mentor” if it took positive action, say the students. Among the signatories to the letter is Jillian Oakley, a former member of the New Zealand women’s team. She is a first-year Parks and Recreation student at Lincoln.
