Good start
The leading South Island reinsman for the last two seasons, Michael de Filippi, started the new term with a flourish by winning three races at the Timaru Harness Racing Club’s meeting yesterday. He won with Special Star, Shesa Monti and Metro Boy. Special Star came off the back of the freegoing pacemaker, Innes Lass, to score decisively by three and a quarter lengths in the Dore Bros Trot. The Game Pride six-year-old, trained at Washdyke by Acker Cowan, had not raced for 10 months, but trotted the 2600 yesterday in a useful 3:28.2. “He’s taken time. He can trot for a long way but he’s always been a bit rough trotting with his hind legs,” said Cowan. “We’ve tried everything with him but it doesn’t seem to make any difference. It is good to have patient owners,” he said. Special Star was having just his tenth career outing yesterday and paid $30.55 to win. The favourite, Le Due, was timed over his last 2000 m in 2:33.6 and his final 800 m in 59.2 to make ground solidly for third, but was always battling to get in touch with the leaders after a slowish start.
