'Phone bill rise ‘less than inflation’

Political reporter

The increase in telephone rental charges due soon will be less than the inflation rate since the last price rise, according to the Minister for State-Owned Enterprises, Mr Prebble. “They (Telecom) have undertaken to me that the increase in the basic phone rental charge will be less than the C.P.I. increase since the last time telephone charges were adjusted,” he said.

“The news is even better. Telecom is actually planning to

cut the cost of many of its services. In real terms that is a substantial reduction.” Mr Prebble also said that restructuring and deregulating the telecommunication industry would add as much as 1 per cent to G.D.P.

He quoted the recent Touche Ross Review as saying that deregulation would halve the price of internal toll calls.

“People in rural areas who make even more toll calls will be even bigger beneficiaries,” he said.
