Squash teams
Philippa Beams, aged 18, is an exciting newcomer inthe Canterbury squash teams named last evening for the national inter-district events at the Palmerston North club next month. '
Not only has Beams made the provincial team for the first time, but she has initially been slotted in at No. 2, ahead of a trio of more experienced players. Beams, a West Coaster attending university in Christchurch, is an aggressive player with a fine array of shots and an enviable ability to hit dead nicks. The women’s team has been bolstered by the inclusion of the former New Zealand No. 4, Jillian Oakley, who has moved to Christchurch from Wellington, and the availability of Carolyn Oakley after temporarily giving away squash at the start of the season.
A feature of the Canterbury men’s team is the return of Hayes after five years, most of which time he was living in Auckland. Craig Hibbert, another stalwart of past years, is also back in the team after only making non-travelling reserve in 1987. This year’s New Zealand national championships will be held from September 9 to 17. The teams named by the representative selectors, Don Preston, Merle Holland and Fred Williams are (in present ranking order). — Men: Rod Hayes, Paul Viggers, Craig Hibbert, Michael Penman, Michael Allred (subject to fitness) or Adrian Casey. Manager: Wayne Seebeck. Women: Jillian Oakley, Philippa Beams, Justine Marriott, Freda Walker, Carolyn Oakley. Non-travelling reserve and manager: Ann Harliwich.
