South Island ski-field conditions reported to the New Zealand Snow Centre yesterday were (all facilities operating unless stated): Mount Hutt: Base 35cm; last fall 3cm July 30; variable snow conditions, packed powder on main trails; chains to be carried. Broken Riven Base 45cm; packed powder; chains necessary. The Remarkables: Base 40 to 70cm; last fall August 1; groomed and packed powder snow on main trails. Cardrona: Areas of hard packed snow. Treble Cone: Base 30cm; last fall 20cm August 1. Temple Basin: Base 65cm; last fall '2ocm August 1; packed powder. Fox Glacier: Last fall August 1; helicopter and ski planes operating subject to weather. Tasman Glacier: Last fall 30cm July 31; ski planes operating subject to weather. Ohau: Last fall 6cm August 2; groomed and windpacked powder; T-bar and learners’ tow operating; chains required. Mount Dobson: Closed. Mount Cheeseman: Open; learner’s tow and T-bar operating; chains to be carried. Craigieburn Valley: Open; top and middle tows operating; chains to be carried. Rainbow: Base 50cm; last fall August 1; packed powder; all facilities operating.
