Rugby format talks
The format of the senior rugby competition is certain to be the main topic for discussion at a meeting between the Canterbury Rugby Union’s management committee and club captains and presidents (or chairmen) called for August 18. It was suggested at the union’s committee meeting this week that senior coaches be invited to attend, but the suggestion was not adopted. “I don’t feel it is appropriate. The meeting will take a wider bearing than just the senior competition,” the president of the Canterbury union, Les Russell, said, adding that the media had got its teeth into the present structure of the competition. Messrs Russell and Craig Sullivan will represent the union at a meeting between sports bodies and the Christchurch City Council to discuss ground rental charges.
