French Government compensates betting loss

NZPA-Reuter Paris The French Government brought a smile back to the faces of furious gamblers on Tuesday when it decided to foot the bill after horse racecourse judges got their numbers wrong. Combination betters were delighted after backing three horses which romped home on Sunday. Queues formed at pay-

out booths — but the punters were shocked when a different series of winning numbers was posted. Losers about to throw their slips away rushed to collect. Course officials admitted a mistake had been made but said they had to pay out on the betting numbers officially advertised. Bitter losers — who should have been winners — finally

received their reward when Prime Minister Michel Rocard’s office issued a statement saying they would be compensated in full. The Government declined to say what sums of money were involved but it was believed to amount to several million francs. The lucky winners — who should have been losers — also get to keep their ill-gotten gains.
