SQUASH

Marist I held off Christchurch I on a games countback when the top two teams in the Computerland women’s open grade inter-club squash competition clashed on Tuesday evening. Although without its top player, Jillian Oakley, because of illness, the Christchurch team still won two rubbers through meritorious efforts by Gaye Munnerley and Karen Williams.

Munnerley had an especially good four-game victory over Marist’s No. 1, Trade Baldwin, and was named “player of the night," something to savour for her.birthday celebrations the next day.

Marist came out on top thanks to straight games wins by Sandra Mackinnon and Judith Casbolt. In another contest, Lancaster Park II scraped home against Sumner by the smallest possible margin, a single point. The rubbers wre tied, 2-2, the games’ were 7-7 and Park eventually prevailed on a 90 to 89 points countback.

One of the the most impressive performances of the night was the demolition job done by the attacking junior player, Philippa Beams (Christchurch II), on the capable Leonie Ward (Lancaster Park I). Ward was allowed a paltry three points. The men’s open grade leader, Lancaster Park, collected another “10-pointer,” this time against Burnside, in spite of a valiant effort by that side. Four of the rubbers went

the full distance and the topranked Canterbury man, Paul Viggers (Lancaster Park), was especially hard-pressed to hold off a determined * Michael Allred.

High School Old Boys surprised with a narrow win over the third-placed side, Sumner, helped by Lawrence Skurr’s success against Tristan Franklin. The men’s player of the night was the Linwood junior, Michael Cassidy, a mere DI, who took the B-grader, Frank Young (Christchurch II), to the wire in a gutsy performance.
