S.B.H.S. back in chess contention
Shirley Boys’ High School came back into contention for a place in the final of “The Press” chess teams’ competition when it held the unbeaten Ashburton to a three-all draw in the fourth round.
Shirley’s middle-order earned it a valuable half point. Dean Sanderson (board three), Seth Wagoner (board four) and Michael Burns (board five) scored vital wins for Shirley, Burns retaining his perfect record. Last year’s title-holder, Burnside, and the 10 times champion, Christchurch Boys', both swept to 6-0 wins and the outcome of their deferred match might decide
the favourite for the grand final.
Christ’s College scored its first win when it claimed the bottom four board decisions against St Andrew’s to win, 42. Andrew Blunt, Brent Nabbs, David Ussher and Justin MacFarlane were the Christ’s College victors. A win this week against Burnside B would put Shirley B in a strong position to win zone one of the B grade, while there is an equally important contest in zone two, between Christchurch Boys’ B and Papanui. The defending champion, Burnside, is making no race of the girls’ grade. It took maximum points from the
first series in the double round-robin competition, but it will be without a top player for the second round. Results: A grade: Burnside 6, St Andrew’s 0; Ashburton 3, Shirley B.H.S. 3; Christchurch B.H.S. 6, St Bede’s 0; Christ’s College 4, St Andrew’s 2. B grade: Zone I: Christchurch B.H.S.
