AUSTRALIA Scramble for blue chips

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Autralian sharemarket powered ahead to a new post crash high as local and offshore buyers scrambled for blue chip stocks, brokers said. “The market has never looked more promising than it has in the last few weeks,” one operator said. The market started strongly after Wall Street's 16 point gain and improved bullion prices and surged further in a bullish reaction to the current account deficit figure of sAustBB2 million (SNZI.O7 billion). By the close of floor trading, the all ordinaries index was up 18 points to 1641.5, its best since October 19. The all industrials rose 27.1 to a post crash high of 2606.4. The all resources was 10.9 higher at 909.3 and the gold marker jumped 33.1 to 2014.8. Turnover amounted to 140.51 M shares worth sAust237.sBM. Brokers said volumes remained modest due to a shortage of scrip. “People just do not want to let their stocks go ... it’s difficult to find any sellers,” one broker said. Rises led falls by about almost two to one.
