Pet food venture
Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Co-operative (AFFCo) and Ajinomoto General Foods Inc. (AGF), of Tokyo, have formed a joint venture company to make pet food. The partners will each own 50 per cent of the new company, which will have its production and administration offices at Mount Maunganui, having bought the Mount Maunganui plant from the receivers of Silverbridge Holdings. AGF, with a 1988 turnover of $806.8 million is a large Tokyo-based coffee and pet foods manufacturer. It markets pet foods under the Gaines brand, and holds a 14 per cent share of the Japanese market. AFFCo is a meat and meat by-products processor and exporter. Its 1988 turnover was $493M and it is represented in 70 countries.
Production will be predominantly exported, initially of canned products to Japan.
