Treaty education plan on way?
PA Wellington The Government should promote an education package to teach people about the Treaty of Waitangi, said the chairman of the Maori Council, Sir Graham Latimer, yesterday. Such a programme, should tell people what the treaty is and how it affects day-to-day deci-sion-making in New Zealand, Sir Graham said. “The Government should be looking to educate people formally and informally,” he said. Sir Graham was asked his views in light of results of the latest “National Business Re-view”-Insight New Zea-
land survey. Results of the June survey show a marked racial split was developing in New Zealand over the treaty, the paper said.
Race relations and the place of the treaty in New Zealand society and law have already been identified, by Maori people at least, as the two main issues of the 1990 General Election.
The survey asked 750 New Zealanders whether they believed the provisions of the treaty should be part of New Zealand law.
Almost one-third (31 per cent) said yes and half (50 per cent) said no. The other 19 per cent did not know.
