Alamo visit
NZPA-Reuter San Antonio, Texas
The Chief of the Soviet General Staff, Sergei Akhromeyev, on Saturday toured the Alamo, one of the most famous sites of America's Old West.
Marshal Akhromeyev was shown through the chapel turned fortress where Mexican troops in 1836 wiped out a besieged, outnumbered band of Texas revolutionaries, including the legendary Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie.
Marshal Akhromeyev told reporters he was pleased with the way the site was maintained and the way Texans “Remember the Alamo,” the rallying cry of the Texas revolution.
“I especially like the way you keep the memory of the heroes of your past,” he told reporters. “As a military man, I think it’s very important and I like it.”
Marshal Akhromeyev and other Soviet military leaders are making a tour of American bases.
