M.P. after presidency

The member of Parliament for Sydenham, Mr Jim Anderton, has reaffirmed his bid for the presidency of the Labour Party. Mr Anderton said yesterday that in the wake of the party president, Mr Rex Jones, declaring he would step down, he would proceed with his plans to stand for the office. Mr Anderton was Labour Party president from 1979 to 1984, and had been nominated again for the position two months ago. He said this was on the proviso that if Mr Jones sought re-elec-

tion, he would withdraw. Mr Anderton said he was disappointed but not surprised that Mr Jones was relinquishing the presidency. The Sydenham member said he was putting his name forward as an alternative candidate because of a Cabinet view that one of its number should lead the party. “I do not believe the party should be led by a Cabinet Minister. I’m not even particularly enamoured of its being led by an M.P., but I regard myself as an alternative to Cabinet Leadership.”
