Big turnout for St John cadet competitions
The Order of St John Christchurch area cadet competitions yesterday .provided what is believed to be the largest turnout of cadets to a competition, said the cadet leader, Mr Brian Blakeway. Mr Blakeway also said the standard of the competitions was excellent and indicated Christchurch cadets were of a higher standard than other New Zealand squads. He put their proficiency down to the long hours of work by the cadets and the standard of leadership. He said the competitions were excellent training and gave cadets an opportunity to learn from their mistakes.
Yesterday’s competition theme was accidents at school. Cadets had to cope with simulated amputations in woodwork rooms.
drowning in school pools, a cyclist in collision with a car, and sports injuries.
There were 140 cadets involved including invited divisions from Greymouth, Timaru, Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Ashburton.
All 14 Christchurch divisions were represented.
The victims in the simulated incidents were girl guides, non-competing cadets and parents. Results of the competitions were: Teams. — Senior: Shirley 1, No. 3 cadet division 2, Selwyn-Fendalton 3. Junior: No. 3 cadet division 1, Bishopdale-Cranmer 2, Opawa 3. Novice pairs: No. 3 cadet division 1, St Martins 2, Hornby 3.
Individual. — senior: St Martins 1, No. 3 cadet division 2, Greymouth 3. Junior: No. 3 cadet division 1, Selwyn-Fendalton 2, Lyttelton 3.
