Abseil protest at felling of bush

PA Wellington Conservationists yesterday abseiled down New Zealand Forest Products’ head office in Auckland to protest at the company’s clearfellihg of “outstanding” native bush. About 40 members of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society and the Maruia Society also erected banners on the building, the director of

the Forest and Bird Society, Dr Gerry McSweeney, said. The two groups were angry at NZ Forest Pro-, ducts’ refusal to discuss the roading and clearfelling of an area of native forest in the Bay of Plenty, he said. Gammons Block, on the Mamaku plateau next to the Kaimai Mamaku conservation park, was being

felled in spite of its high conservation values. Half of the forest had been ranked as outstanding for wildlife by the former Wildlife Service and the other half received a “high” classification. The forest .was home to the endangered kokako and many other threatened native birds including the kaka, brown kiwi, robin and native pigeon.
