Dancing in Square
Sir, —In an article (June 23), about the food fair in the Square, etc., and the need of activities for the Square, Mr Catley suggested the use of bands during the Commonwealth Games. Why not take that suggestion a step further by having dancing more often for the locals? The visitors would be welcome to join in, and I am sure they would. There are a number of good amateur bands in Christchurch that would be willing, I am sure, to participate on a rostered basis — dancing some days for the young, but not forgetting the "oldies” either. An afternoon dance would be welcome to a lot of people — dances such as the “Maxina” and "The Spanish Waltz” type of thing some days, but also some good quicksteps and slow foxtrots as well. We have few places we can go to enjoy our dancing skills, unless we go to the smoky clubs, and not all of us want to do that. It is also great exercise as well as fun. A roped-off area with a bright canopy over the band area perhaps? I feel sure it would be a winner. A small charge could be made to cover costs. — Yours, etc., ELIZABETH VAN DEN HOVEN. June 23, 1988.
